ABOUT SCHOOL

HISTORY OF BAI NAVAJ BAI TATA GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL,  NAVSARI.

Ours is the most prominent Girls’ School in Navsari district. It was started in 1858 with only 59 students on its roll and this increased to 80 within next three years. During that period classes were conducted upto STD 4, and the annual expenditure of the school from 1866 to 1872 was managed by Seth Sorabji Shahpurji Bangali and Seth Nusserwanji Ratanji Tata.

In 1872 Seth Nusserwanji Ratanji Tata donated Rs 7,000/- in the sacred memory of his beloved sister Navajbai and the school was coronated by her name as “BAI NAVAJ BAI TATA ZORASTRIAN GIRLS’ SCHOOL.”

On 27th March 1883 Seth Nusserwanji R. Tata executed a Trust and build a separate and exclusive madressa building at the cost of Rs 20,000 with a view of teaching Avesta, Kusti and Craft to the girls.

In 1886 Jamsetji Tata donated Rs 5,000/- in sacred memory of his father Nusserwanji R. Tata to the school. In the same year a committee was formed to look after its activities and the trust deed was signed by Jamsetji Tata himself. In 1918 the school started teaching English as one of the subjects.

In 1924 the High School Section was started and the subjects were being taught according to the matriculation curriculum. To start Secondary section Dorabji J Tata gave Rs. 4.50 lacs to the school. In 1934 the first batch of our students appeared at the matriculation examination being affiliated to the Bombay University.

In 1950 the trustees gave Rs. 2.50 lacs to build a two storeyed building ant it was inaugurated on 27th June. The school also has a spacious playground of about 30,000 sq ft area. The school also comprises in itself a large hall of 56 x 35 ft and 40 x 20 ft gymnasium and one drama school.

Free education was imparted by the Tata family to the Zoroastrian girls till 1948. In today’s time, fees are collected according to the norms of the government. Till today we have kept the tradition of the Tata family alive by imparting free education to the Zoroastrian girls and free books, uniforms and other necessities by the fund created for this purpose for the poor girls.

In 1953 this school was made open for all the girls from different religions and communities, and by the end of 1955 the number of girls students on the roll was as follows:

190 Parsee Girls.
216 Hindu Girls.
   32 Muslim Girls.
     02 Christian Girls.
---------------------
                   440 Total number of students.

In 1977 the government introduced new pattern of education 10 + 2. So, we started a higher secondary school for Arts and Commerce students. Due to this it was not possible to run the school in one shift. Therefore, pre-primary and primary run in the morning and secondary and higher secondary runs in the afternoon shift.

In today’s time our school is well-equipped with modern gazettes and equipments to make the learning process more interesting and easy. We believe in teaching through play-way method and for this, we use audio-visual aid to impart education to the students of Jr. Kg to 4th Std in all the subjects. Along with this the students from 5th to 10th Std is being taught Maths and science through audio-visual aid.

In this modern world computer is known as the window of world knowledge and to open this window for our students we have a computer lab with 20 computers and more to join the list soon.

As we have completed the 150 years of our existence, we have organized a grand celebration in Tata Auditorium on 20th November 2008. It was a huge success.

From the next year our school is going to step in a new arena of English medium and science section, i.e. we are going to open a science section and English medium school for the next academic year.

For this new building is being built in the backyard of the school. It has a large auditorium with stage on the ground floor, Principal’s office and 7 classrooms on the first floor and laboratories, staff room, other class rooms and a hall on the third floor. Ours is the only school in the district were both English as well as Gujarati medium runs in one premise.

The trustees are planning to run the whole school in one shift for all the standards of Gujarati as well as English medium and the new time will be 10:30 to 4:30.

The new building is equipped with the latest equipments and extra curricular activities such as judo, karate, gymnastic, skating, dancing, etc. are also being planned to be taught to the students.

It is the dream of the trustees and the school staff to see the on the highest pedestal of glory and success. There are still many dreams and aims which are to be fulfilled in the coming years and for that the staff of the school is always working on its front foot.

We are very lucky to have Mr. Freddie Movdhawala, the Secretary and Mr. H. D. Malesara, the chairman of the school who are always on their front foot to help, give support and provide with whatever help is needed by the principal and the staff for the betterment of the school.

In the last five years they have provided the school with science laboratory equipments, library books with cabinets, equipments of gymnastics, L. C. D Projector, T.V. with video-audio player, Photo-copying machine, close-circuit cameras with micro-phones, extra computers other than computer Lab for the staff and the students.
